Pirates! Yay!

Overall, I pretty much agree with everything [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda said in her (first) post on the subject. But I do have some thoughts of my own.

Very confusing plot. Can't deny that. I didn't mind the first time seeing it, because I've come to expect that in a PotC movie, but I've now seen it three times (*shame*), and I still don't understand it all the way. It's down to a couple lines that don't make sense to me, but still.

Anyway, it's when Jack and Beckett are scheming together, and Beckett asks "What will happen to Miss Swann?" and Jack replies, "What would be your interest in her?" And then it cuts to Elizabeth doing something-or-other, and then cuts back to Jack and Beckett, but the question never gets answered.

Also, I'd like to know the backstory between Jack and Beckett. All that talk of betrayal and stuff, and we don't know what exactly happened. Who betrayed whom? I presume they ended up betraying each other, but I'm curious to know. But I suppose that's what fanfic is for.

Something my baby sister pointed out: This movie relies on the audience rooting for the pirates, who were, essentially, bad people. In order to get the audience firmly on the side of the pirates (just in case there's some doubt from the first two movies), the very beginning of the movie shows the authorities, or rather, the East India Company (??), suspending all the rights of the citizens. Habeus corpus, assembly, and so forth. And then, just in case some moviegoers don't really understand all that talk about rights, they hang a child. All that done, the sides of good and evil are topsy-turvy, and Up Is Down. Even Pintel and Ragetti, who were definitely bad, albeit stupid, guys in the first movie, are cutesy and lovably stupid in this one.

I loved Will and Elizabeth in this movie. I remember being all geeked and psyched about the turn her and Will's characters were taking at the end of DMC, and I was not disappointed. Especially Elizabeth. I loved the scene with the Brethren Court, and the election, particularly the look on Jack's face when he said "Elizabeth Swann." I loved that Elizabeth got to be the one to give the rousing speech, while Barbossa looked bummed and devastated. I had to smirk to myself about pirates fighting "for freedom," but I loved Elizabeth too much to care.

I loved Barbossa, and Monkey Jack, I loved Keith Richards. Orlando Bloom is suddenly attractive to me again. I loved the references to sea turtles, and the almost-return of "Please..... I'm Captain Jack Sparrow," which I had missed in the second movie. The flipping of the ship was a definite highlight, as was the final battle in the whirlpool. I giggled at Barbossa's ineptitude as a lover, and Ragetti's resulting "heroism." *snicker* I even loved the friggin' soundtrack, and will probably buy it, once I can reconcile myself to buying a soundtrack.

I was touched by Governor Swann's death, and Elizabeth's growing hysteria, but I didn't like the way Norrington was handled. I thought it would have been interesting to have him join the pirates, but I guess that was one plotline they decided they couldn't handle. Shame.

And suddenly, "A touch...... of destiny!" makes sense. Honestly, I was heartbroken when Will died, but I knew Jack was going to let him stab the heart, so he'd come back. I was bummed for Elizabeth's sake, because of the whole every-ten-years thing, and how horny she was in DMC, but as long as they could be together in some way, I'd have been fine with it. Eventually. ;)

Then after the credits, they show Elizabeth and Will, Jr. waiting for Will to come back. The expression on Will's face was just beautiful. And I was happy again, although bittersweet, that they'd be together for another day, and he'd get to see his son. But then I thought, "What happened to King Elizabeth Swann?" And I noted Elizabeth's new, proper attire, and that of her son, and I started getting bummed out again. But then I thought, "Well, maybe she just decided to make herself pretty for this one day with her husband. She's really been out fighting the whole time, and this is her vacation. Yeah."

And I felt better. But still bittersweet, because once-every-ten-years. But then I found the information from [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda's journal, and my heart was completely healed. It doesn't make complete sense in light of a few lines that actually made it into the movie, but I'll take it.

I loved that Jack and Barbossa are now in essentially the same state as in the beginning of the first movie --- only now Barbossa's not undead. And did we always know his first name was Hector? Anyway, I'm a little iffy on whether I want there to be a fourth movie or not, but I know that if there is one, I'll be there to see it. And now that Will and Elizabeth are tied up all neatly, maybe it can be something that doesn't involve them. :D
