Today was nice. Went to the movies (saw Narnia again). Found an interesting little thrift store. Looked around a bit. Relaxed.

Started a new class: Women In Literature. It's relatively new at the college; I think it and African American Lit are the newest additions to the catalogue. So far (one class in), I'm really enjoying it. Professor is passionate about the subject, and seems to know what she's talking about. Score one for this term: I will enjoy at least one class. Last term, I enjoyed none.

I'm so sleepy. Don't know why; it's only 11:30, and I took a nap after school. *yawn*

Going to try to get some writing done before I go to bed.

Sounds like a fun course!!! Hope the writing went well!

I keep wondering...

How do all those people on my Flist manage to see all those movies for a second/third/fourth time? I barely manage once, and usually not even that!

Well, it's pretty much the only recreational thing I know how to do. That and shopping. And I come from a fairly geeky family who enjoy going over things again and again and again. :)

sounds interesting....

What sort of content will you cover in the course?
Is it a characters-based thing, or more gravitating towards female authors?

And it is astonishing how beneficial it can be to have the instructor being passionate towards the subject. I wonder how many people get put off things which could be genuinely interesting, for the reason that there exposure to it at school was uninspiring.

It's more about the authors, with a planned tangent for "gender issues." Should be interesting; there are only about 4 guys in the class. hee!

Do you have an indication of which authors or time period you're going to be focussing on?

And as for the number of men - my entire schooling (school and uni) was like that - it seemed we outnumbered the boys about 7 to 1. They seemed to like it ;)

yeah, girls outnumber boys in all my classes, but not usually by that proportion. This is a pretty full class; 35+ students.

The authors we'll be studying are listed in the syllabus, but I don't have it with me right now. I know it includes Emily Dickinson, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Mary Wollstonecraft, Anne Bradstreet, Toni Morrison, and Kate Chopin. I think there are more, but I'm not sure.

Ooh that's a really good list. I studied Toni Morrison's Beloved in third year which was somewhat blergh, but the rest sound good.

You've probably read it before but I think no women's lit is complete without Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own. It's relatively short so give it a read if you have the time.

Btw, are you ever going to finish the updated version of Blind Luck? I miss poor Matt and Georgie :)

Oh yeah, Virginia Woolf might have been on the list, too! I really should check that..... I've always gotten the impression that Toni Morrison is what I refer to as an Oprah writer, so I've never really been keen on trying her out. My professor seems to like her quite a bit, though, so we'll see.

I'm so glad you asked about Blind Luck! Argh, I'm working on it, slowly but, well, not very surely, either, but I'm working on it. I got a little stuck in the last chapter, but I'm nearing the climax. I just want to finish it before I post anymore.

as an oprah writer... sadly enough that was fairly much how I viewed her and things didn't improve after reading the book. It's very confusing, and I've often found I don't like books so much when the critics absolutely rave over them.

Yay for Blind Luck. It's one of those stories I love to go back and reread every so often, and now that the old version is off the boards I have to content mysef with an incomplete work! I know I've been a bit of a lurker for the past.. well.... ages, but this is one story I've definitey not forgotten it. I'm so pleased it's not been completely abandoned :)

I'm so happy to hear you say that! Seriously, you've made my night. I'm going to friend you now (if that's okay).

I have the same contrariness with regards to critics' reviews, btw. I much prefer going in blind.

Sure, Gabby, that's fine (you'll find my flist is rather small - basically I just have the lj to keep track of shem).

Thanks :)

What exactly are you studying? The two courses you mentioned sound good to me.

Hee. My major is accounting. Women In Literature is for my humanities credits in general education.

Okay, then this course is definitely something new/different for you. ;) I do such courses all the time as I study literature, culture and politics. A course on accounting would be a novelty for me. ;)
